I felt them before I saw who they were, and not in the traditional way. The tingling and stabbing started before I saw them. Those damn charms. I moved up to the top landing and hid behind the thick wooden post. In hindsight, I should have made a break for the door. I could have been through it before anyone noticed. It would have saved me some torture, but it was too late now. At least where I was now had reduced the effects of the charms to nothing more than something like bug bites. Just an annoyance that caused my body to twitch. My hands rubbed up and down my legs and stomach to relief the itching, but that didn’t work. I made another glance at the door. I was curious about who was coming, but was I really that curious?

My answer really didn’t matter. Time had answered that question for me. I forced my body to stay still while I watched Mrs. Wintercrest and that thorn-in-my-side, Miss Roberts, lead the council marching by the stairs in rows of two. Each wore their ceremonial red robes. It was amazing. Even in something so regal, Miss Roberts looked tacky. I wasn’t sure which witch I disliked most, Gwen or her. That was unfair. It was definitely her. I hated her, and I just disliked Gwen. If I were allowed to talk to the witches, I might plant a few suggestions in Gwen’s head about Miss Roberts and see what trouble I could stir up.

“Council members, please,” Mrs. Saxon’s voice yelled from down the hall. She sounded out of breath. In a few seconds, her first step hit the marble floor of the entry, and the click of her heel echoed in the grand space. Ms. Wintercrest appeared to huff at the commotion. I felt a little pleasure at seeing her irritation. “Supreme Wintercrest, if I may?” she requested.

Mrs. Wintercrest never looked back in her direction, but her mini-me Miss Roberts stepped right out of the line and turned, blocking Mrs. Saxon’s approach.

“You have made your point quite clear, Mrs. Saxon.” Miss Roberts leered with a point of her finger right at Mrs. Saxon.

Mrs. Saxon ignored both her and her attitude without so much as a look and attempted to walk right around her. Miss Roberts shuffled to her right to block her. The two almost collided, and Mrs. Saxon had to give ground to avoid hitting her. I looked up and down the line of council members for any reaction. Most appeared to be ignoring what was going on. Even Mr. Nevers, who I knew well from my time in New Orleans. He wasn’t exactly a fan of Mrs. Wintercrest, and I couldn’t imagine he was supportive of anything that was going on. Though I wasn’t sure what type of reaction I expected from him or any of the other members. Mrs. Wintercrest had her thumb pressed tightly on each of them. That and the threat of exile I had already seen her use now twice.
